Wisdom at the Crossroads

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Service at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London included a specially commissioned sung Anthem about Wisdom, drawn from the Old Testament Book of Proverbs. Wisdom is such an inclusive, accessible, diverse, priceless, concept, available to all people, in all places, at all times. Here we look at these Wisdom verses.

“Does not Wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates, in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: ‘To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live … Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for Wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her’… Wisdom was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be.”

What are some forms of Wisdom which ring true for you, which invite your attention, which delight and console you, and which you want to hold close along the way?

Pentecost – Sunday June 5th, 2022

This Sunday, we celebrate Pentecost and the beginning of Pride Month as we hear two scripture readings – Genesis 11:1-9 and Acts 2:1-21. Where is the Holy Spirit calling us today? What do we hear in scripture about our differences? What are our dreams and visions?

Looking Ahead:

Healing Series: Music – Sunday May 29, 2022

This Sunday, we continue our Healing Series by reflecting on the healing power of Music. As we focus on music we will hear a little background on our hymns and anthems, which include Prayer for Ukraine as well as the hymn When In Our Music God is Glorified. We are also planning for a small role reversal, as Matt leads our prayers and Emily plays our sung prayer response!

Today’s story from scripture is one you might have never heard discussed in church. It is a story about David before he becomes king, when he is known for his skill in playing the harp, and how he helps King Saul with this gift.

We will be lighting candles for joys and sorrows during the service as well.

Looking Ahead

On June 5 we will celebrate Pentecost.

Then, June 12 we will celebrate our Church Birthday!

Peace – Sunday May 22, 2022

This Sunday, we welcome Sharon Beckstead as organist and choir director while Matt is away. Our theme today is Peace, and we will hear Makiko’s anthem Kamome (Seagulls) as we mark Asian Heritage Month (the translation is later in the email).

Last week, we turned to the poetry of T.S. Eliot as we reflected on the language of Revelation. This week, we will turn to the poetry of Korean poet Ko Un as we think about Jesus’ gift of peace.

Looking Ahead:

On May 29 we continue our Healing Series by reflecting on the healing power of Music. We are also planning for a small role reversal, as Matt leads our prayers and Emily plays for our sung prayer response!
