Making A Will

Make A will Month Presentation on Wills & POAs

November is Make a Will Month (MAWM), when the Ontario Bar Association offers public seminars to educate the public about the importance of having a will. The Pastoral Care Committee took this opportunity to host a Lunch & Learn MAWM event on November 4. Over 50 people attended to learn important pointers about Wills, Estate Planning and Powers of Attorney (POAs) from Areta Lloyd who practices Estate Law, Elder Law and Health Law with Dickson Appell.

In addition to the importance of having an up-to-date will and POA prepared by a lawyer, a lot of ground was covered: the appointment and powers of executors and trustees; trusts for your minors or other beneficiaries; assets included in a will, to mention a few.  It is particularly important to review your will after major life changes. Most attendees felt motivated to review their wills after this session.

Areta Lloyd also discussed ‘wishes’ that can be included in your will but are not legally binding. This could deal with funeral and burial arrangements. For assistance with expressing your wishes, see the LUC website, Life Changes section: http://www.leasideunited.org/funerals-and-memorials/ . Areta manages a web site to provide resources and guidance for POA attorneys. See: http://powerofattorneyguide.com.

Let’s Do Lunch!

Sunday, November 18th, 2018 – 11:45am Auditorium

LEASIDE UNITED CHURCH – hosted by the LUC Renovation Team

LET’S DO LUNCH:

We are pleased to invite you to an important opportunity to analyze the revised conceptual drawings and defined scope of work for our renovation plans.  A light lunch of pizza (vegetarian and gluten free will be available) and salad will be provided (bring a brown bag lunch if this is not to your liking).

The Leaside United Church Renovation Team listened carefully to you and your unique perspectives and needs during and after last month’s Lunch and Learn (October 21st) and the Town Hall (October 28th). As well as having insightful individual conversations and feedback via email and written responses the team along with the Larkin architects were able to further tweak the plans.

El Hogar Triva Night – A Huge Canadian Success!

The Winners! Team: “Blame it on Julie”

On Saturday, November 3rd, over 100 people filled Leaside United’s gym to participate in a fundraiser Trivia Night in support of El Hogar. The theme this year was …Canada!

The competition was fierce, the cheers loud and the excitement high. Everyone enjoyed good food and drink – and good company! After eight rounds of Canadian trivia covering topics such as, movies, music, politics and geography, it came down to a tie for first place. After a short tie break round, “Blame it on Julie” eked out a win over “True North”. (Do you know the only year that Canada has sent a men’s team to the FIFA World Cup?)

Close to $3000 was raised in support of El Hogar in Honduras. Leaside United will be sending a team of 11 to visit El Hogar in March 2019. The team would like to thank all who came to play, or sent donations. Muchas gracias!

Oh, and by the way, the answer is 1986, that was the last time Canada sent a team to the World Cup!

Thank you to Murray Fenner for taking these photos of the event:

Eco-Tip from LUC’s Green Team for Global Wellness

The recent UN report on climate change is a stark reminder that we need to make some significant lifestyle changes in order to save our planet. Cycling is a great, environmentally friendly way to get around the city. It often takes less time to cycle than it does to take public transit. People who cycle to work arrive feeling alert and energized, as well as reporting better mental and physical health than their non-cycling peers. It is a fantastic way to incorporate fitness into your regular routine without much of an additional time commitment. If more people get out on their bicycles, it becomes safer for all cyclists. It is possible to cycle year-round in Toronto. Remember, there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Get involved in advocating to make our city safer for cyclists through www.cycleto.ca.
