Spring Awesome Sale! Round Up

ANOTHER MIRACULOUS AWESOME SALE

The May 2018 Leaside United Church (LUC) Awesome Sale earned $28,500. This means that our grand total, as of this 23rd year, is now about $820, 000!

As many of you know, Leaside United Church has designated 25% of this revenue to empower and enable much LUC Outreach work, This year, there was a major new challenge for the Sale. For the first time, there was no Furniture Department and thus, it was reasonable to expect a $4,000 to $5,000 drop in total revenue.

However, this Sale has not been aptly named, “The Miracle on Millwood” without reason. There was even more proof provided by the May Sale.

With the additional space provided by the absence of furniture, our dedicated, hard-working and skilled staff was able to display many more items and recruit additional needed staff. However, changes in the locations of several departments created additional work which was handled so well.

We are extremely grateful for our many donors, our terrific sales’ staff and hard-working members of both the Set-up and Clean-up Teams. Again, we are thankful to have many hands and much help from our friends, formerly of Presteign-Woodbine U.C. For this Sale, there was also a significant increase in the number of the volunteers (a.k.a. “new staff”) who are not members of our church but believe in the stewardship, fellowship, fun and fitness represented by the Awesome Sale experience.

Preparation for our Sales is an enormous, year-round effort. This incredible work is provided by a group of very dedicated folks, self named, “the Rag-Pickers”. Many times a year (mostly Friday mornings), these special folk meet to sort, clean, fold, package, and store all the saleable goods for the 17 departments. These people truly play vital roles in the Sales’ success.

A sincere “Thank You” is again extended to all who continue to prove that Leaside’s Awesome Sales are truly, “Miracles on Millwood”!!!

Enjoy these photos taken by Carol Beatty who volunteers behind the scenes in the kitchen for the Awesome Sale Café … she captured these photos in a quiet moment in the setting up stage before the big crowds arrived.

NOTES FROM LUCY:

Spirit Alive – Saturday, June 2, 2018 – Summer Year-End Party – All Welcome!

Led by Lucy Burke, meeting at the home of Bea and Ross Lawford. In this Spirit Alive session, led by Lucy Burke, we lean with delight into Nature’s Summer treasures, and we will consider some of the thoughts of Henry David Thoreau, celebrated naturalist, social activist, writer and philosopher. A United Church Observer article, this past February, celebrated Thoreau and his iconic book on Walden Pond, describing him as having a poet’s soul and a scientist’s eye, and as one who urged his readers to live simply, intentionally, and in harmony with Nature. (Read the article here –  “Visiting Walden Pond”.  What might living simply and intentionally mean for you? Does Thoreau’s admonition to “live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment” resonate with you? What do you think of Thoreau’s equally famous friend Emerson’s words, quoted in the Observer article? “Make your own Bible,” he wrote. “Select and collect those words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.” (Please bring any of your own thoughts on these to share with us!)Come at the regular time of 10:00 to 12 noon for the Spirit Alive program, and then, if you can, stay for potluck lunch into the afternoon. It is a true potluck, so you may bring whatever you would like to share.
