Worship at Home | Virtual Communion Sunday – May 17, 2020

This Sunday we will be celebrating communion. 

You are invited to have bread and juice, wine, or another beverage with you as we gather for worship at 10:30 am one of two ways:

(1) Watch our service livestream at: youtube.com/c/LeasideUnitedChurchToronto   

(2) Share worship together through Zoom:Gather any time after 10 for the 10:30 service. We’ll share in the service together, followed by an opportunity to wish one another the Peace of Christ and share in conversation.  Gather 9:45-10 am to take part in the half hour children’s program before the service.

Looking Ahead: Next week we look forward to a pre-recorded service with our very own virtual choir. On May 17, we will share communion at a distance, and later in May we’ll be having a special Blessing of the Wheels service. We look forward to worshiping together, from a distance.

Reflection

A New Creed
We are not alone,
    we live in God’s world.

A number of years ago, Linnea Good began to work with Keri Wehlander at Ryerson United Church, in Vancouver. It was there that, one day in a small informal worship, she prayed this prayer. Or rather that she danced these words. It was a prayer with flowing movements that elegantly spoke of God in All Things. 
Opening Hymn VU 703 In the Bulb There Is a Flower
From time to time, a choral anthem inspires a hymn. “Hymn of Promise” was first conceived as an anthem in 1985, performed at the Pasadena Communit Church, St. Petersburg, Florida, during a festival concert on Natalie Sleeth’s music. Long known as a composer of anthems, especially for children, Natalie Sleeth contributed one of the favourite new hymns to The United Methodist Hymnal. 
Sung Response MV 114 Behold the Face of Christ
Bernadette Farrell is a British hymnographer and composer of Catholic liturgical music. Bernadette has always had a passion for social justice and that comes to the fore in many of her songs. Born in West Yorkshire in the north o England, she has lived in London for many years with her husband, liturgical composer Owen Alstott. Currently, she is a community organizer for UK Citizens, which advocates for fair housing, a living wage, proper community policing and health care access. 
Offertory Solo I Know that my Redeemer Liveth
Reminding us of our living hope in the Risen Christ, this aria by G. F. Handel, is the third movement of Messiah. Like the rest of its songs and choruses, the text is entirely based on Scripture, in this case on verses from Job 19:25-26 and 1 Corinthians 15:20. Incredibly, Handel lived until the morning of Holy Saturday, April 14, 1759, and his death came only eight days after his final performance, at which he conducted his masterpiece, Messiah. 
Closing Hymn VU 158 Christ is Alive
Brian Wren, a minister in the United Reformed Church of England and Wales, is one of the shining lights in contemporary English hymnody. The cross is empty, and Christ is alive here and now – not tied down to 2000 years ago in Palestine. This is one of the finest new hymns about the meaning of the Resurrection for today.
