Just as we set aside time to spiritually prepare for Christmas Day, it makes sense to set aside time to prepare for one of the most important journeys through the liturgical year. Lent is a time that offers us an opportunity to come to terms with the human condition where we may have spent time running from, and it brings our need for Jesus Christ.
Like Advent, Lent is a time to open the doors of our hearts a little wider and understand Jesus with a little more depth, so that when Good Friday and eventually Easter comes, it is not just another day at church but an opportunity to receive the overflowing joy and grace that God has to offer.
Musically, we will explore contemplative practices such as repetitive chanting and prayerful meditation. Throughout Lent, I will also incorporate some of your favourite hymn selections that you have listed for me to improvise on. During this time, I will also be giving up postludes as a way to centre ourselves on this Lenten journey. Just wait till Easter for the boisterous postlude!
