MUSIC NOTES

Gathering Music – MV 2 “Come All You People”

Uyai Mose is Shona for Come all you people” which sources its song to Zimbabwe by Alexander Gondo. This gathering song of praise is an expression of Psalm100. The arranger of this song is by John Bell who is a Scottish hymn-writer and Church of Scotland minister. He is a member of the Iona Community, and a former student activist.

Opening Hymn – MV 138 “My Love Colours Outside the Lines”

This modern worship song is by Gordon Light (1995) of the Common Cup Company, arranged for More Voices by Andrew Donaldson. Gordon Light was born in Alberta, but as an Air Force brat, lived in many places growing up. He attended Carleton University in Ottawa and trinity College in Toronto. It speaks to our longing to follow God’s call, and gently encourages us to overcome our fear of stepping out of our comfort zone in order to do so.

Closing Hymn – MV 89 “Love is the Touch”

Alison Robertson (b.1940) is an Edinburgh musician, former teacher, and currently the secretary of the Scottish Stained Glass Symposium. One of her aims for this hymn was to write something that people who may not subscribe to the Christian faith could still assent to and be supported by. The ‘lingering voice’ in v. 2 refers to the voices of those who have gone before and still matter to us. The tune was written by John Bell.
