For the beauty of the earth
For the beauty of the skies
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies
Over and around us lies
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise
For the beauty of the hour
Of the day and of the night
Hill and vale and tree and flower
Sun and moon and stars of light
Sun and moon and stars of light
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise
For the joy of human love
Brother, sister, parent, child
Friends on earth and friends above
For all gentle thoughts and mild
For all gentle thoughts and mild Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn of praise
For each perfect gift of thine
To our race so freely given
Graces human and divine
Flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n
Flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our joyful hymn, our joyful hymn of praise
This our joyful hymn of praise
Offertory Solo: A Simple Song from Mass
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)
Sing God a simple song
Lauda, Laudē
Make it up as you go along
Lauda, Laudē Sing like you like to sing
God loves all simple things
For God is the simplest of all. I will sing the Lord a new song
To praise Him, to bless Him, to bless the Lord.
I will sing His praises while I live
All of my days. Blessed is the man who loves the Lord,
Blessed is the man who praises Him.
Lauda, Lauda, Laudē
And walks in His ways. I will lift up my eyes
To the hills from whence comes my help
I will lift up my voice to the Lord
Singing Lauda, Laudē. For the Lord is my shade,
Is the shade upon my right hand
And the sun shall not smite me by day
Nor the moon by night.
Blessed is the man who loves the Lord
Lauda, Lauda, Laudē
And walks in His ways. Lauda, Lauda, Laudē
Lauda, Lauda di da di day…
All of my days.
Sung Blessing: Go Now in Peace Hal Hopson (1933 – )
Go now in peace.
Now, God, you have kept our word:
let your servant go in peace.
With my own eyes I have seen the salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;
a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.
Amen.
About this morning’s vocal music …
Choir Anthem: For the Beauty of the Earth is a Christian hymn with text by Folliott S. Pierpoint (1835-1917). Pierpoint was 29 at the time he wrote this hymn; he was mesmerized by the beauty of the countryside that surrounded him. The work first appeared in 1864 in a book of Eucharistic Hymns and Poems. English composer John Rutter, composed for SATB, SA, or TTBB choir with piano/organ or orchestra accompaniment. This work demonstrates an exceptional ability to write a lyric melody with soaring lines while maintaining a simple sensibility that makes it accessible to performers and audiences alike.
Offertory Solo: A Simple Song is from Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers. This musical theatre work was composed by Leonard Bernsteinwith text by Bernstein and additional text and lyrics by Stephen Schwarts. The performance first premiered as part of the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The work is based on the Tridentine Mass of the Roman Catholic Church. Although the liturgical passages are sung in Latin, Mass also includes additional texts in English.
Sung Blessing: This arrangement of Go Now in Peace was arranged by Hal H. Hopson (b. Texas, 1933). Hopson is a prolific composer, arranger, clinician, teacher and promoter of congregational song, with more than 1300 published works, especially of hymn and psalm arrangements, choir anthems, and creative ideas for choral and organ music in worship. The scriptural reference to this sung blessing is derived from Luke 2:29-32.
