Children’s Time – A Book from Neil’s Library

Last Sunday during Children’s Time we read a book from Neil’s library called:

We Share Everything!

by: Robert Munsch Illustrations by: Michael Martchenko

So it goes like this …

On the first day of kindergarten, Amanda and Jeremiah fight about
books, blocks and paints. The teacher reminds them that in
kindergarten, they should share. Amanda and Jeremiah interpret her
message literally, and share their clothes with each other.

With lots of great sound effects like:

BLUMPH! GAWCK! Ouch! Ouch! Owww

This book has wonderful lessons in disagreement, compromise and diversity. A must read at any age!

Showing our colours at Leaside United Church

Everyday it’s important to show your true colours, but this week and month is especially important because it is Pride Month in Toronto and the Pride Parade will happen this coming Sunday, June 24th.

At Leaside United Church we became an Affirming Congregation just over two years ago and continue to learn about LGBTQ communities, language and relationships.  We are allies and always offer a safe haven to anybody in the LGBTQ community and their support people.  We are known for our inclusiveness and it shows in the pride colours we display.

Here are some of our favorites at Leaside United Church (including resources from our Family Library in the North Transept, and some questions from our big “Book of Questions”).

How are you celebrating Pride? A phone call to a queer friend, displaying a rainbow banner, having a party, getting married to your same sex partner?  Whatever you do, we are thankful to be in a community where we can celebrate #Pride!

Happy Retirement Tanya – A New Dance!

On Wednesday June 13th, we celebrated Tanya Wiles-Bell’s retirement from Leaside United Church and her very successful 10 year ministry as the Christian Education Director and leader of the youth/kids programs.

The light within shone bright from speaker to speaker and through a trumpet/piano duet, songs from the choir, letters from former youth group members, poetry, memories and a treasured ukulele performance from her daughter.  In company of her family and friends, Tanya swayed in the pew gently rocking her new grand-baby as the words and memories flowed from each speaker retelling stories of Tanya’s incredible creativity, kindness and inclusivity.

Leaside United Church wishes Tanya and her family the sweetest music to accompany their new dance!

Murray Fenner our volunteer photographer captured these pictures during the presentation of gifts to Tanya and the cutting of the cake.
