Sleeping Children Around the World

NEW LUC OUTREACH PROJECT

Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW) is a Canadian charity founded in 1970 by Margaret and Murray Dryden after a trip to India where they saw young children sleeping on the streets. You probably know their sons, NHL goalies Ken and Dave. The next year they returned with 50 bedkits that they carried from Canada and they took pictures of the children sleeping on their mats.

The organization grew until today over 1.6 million kits have been distributed by volunteers in some of the poorest countries in the world based on a percentage of the population makes less than $2 a day.
SCAW has a zero overhead policy which guarantees 100% of every donated dollar goes to the child. Each bedkit costs $35 and every cent is used to buy items for the child. All administration costs, printing, mailing are covered by investment trust set up by the Drydens. No money is spent on advertising. It is all by word of mouth and presentations. You are not contacted again to donate again and you don’t get added to some other charities list.

El Hogar Triva Night – A Huge Canadian Success!

The Winners! Team: “Blame it on Julie”

On Saturday, November 3rd, over 100 people filled Leaside United’s gym to participate in a fundraiser Trivia Night in support of El Hogar. The theme this year was …Canada!

The competition was fierce, the cheers loud and the excitement high. Everyone enjoyed good food and drink – and good company! After eight rounds of Canadian trivia covering topics such as, movies, music, politics and geography, it came down to a tie for first place. After a short tie break round, “Blame it on Julie” eked out a win over “True North”. (Do you know the only year that Canada has sent a men’s team to the FIFA World Cup?)

Close to $3000 was raised in support of El Hogar in Honduras. Leaside United will be sending a team of 11 to visit El Hogar in March 2019. The team would like to thank all who came to play, or sent donations. Muchas gracias!

Oh, and by the way, the answer is 1986, that was the last time Canada sent a team to the World Cup!

Thank you to Murray Fenner for taking these photos of the event:

Another Awesome Sale Success

ANOTHER AWESOME SALE SUCCESS

2018 has been another wonderful year for LUC’s Awesome Sales.

The results of the October Sale was very good! In fact they enabled LUC to attain its goal for the year. Without revenue from furniture sales, the 2018 results are even more pleasing.

There are so many vital elements that produce such results. Certainly, the donated goods to sell are needed. Supply never seems to be a problem! Thank you, Donors!
