Third Sunday after Epiphany”. . . And Follow Me” with Rev. Miriam Spies

This Sunday we welcome guest preacher Rev. Miriam Spies. Miriam’s PhD work surrounds disability and practical theology and disability studies, looking at how congregations can best support disabled leadership.

Miriam’s Cerebral Palsy impacts her speech, so you may like to read along while she preaches (or reread it later). Follow the Scripture and Sermon link on the HERE. For those joining on Zoom, Miriam will lead our Opening Prayer – read along in our Order of Service.

This Sunday is our second week hearing Jesus call disciples. We will sing the hymn “Jesus, You Have Come to the Lakeshore.”

Join us for Stories and Crafts at 9:55am (gather at 9:45), as we hear another story of Jesus by water – the baptism of Jesus.

Next Sunday
We explore words from Psalm 62: “For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from God.”

The Second Sunday after Epiphany “Will You Come?”

This Sunday January 17th, we hear the story of Jesus finding two disciples, Philip and Nathaniel. What does the invitation to “Come and See” mean for us, right now?

Our service will include Psalm 139 and the hymn “I am the Light of the World.” If you are joining over Zoom, we’ll also hear “I Am Offering this Poem” by Jimmy Santiago Baca and the hymn “Will You Come and See the Light.”

Join us for worship at 10:30 on Zoom, or join for conversation at 11:15am.

For the Stories and Craft program, you will need a bowl, milk, food colouring, and dish soap. Intrigued? Watch the program at 9:55am on Zoom, or any time on YouTube.

Next Sunday January 24th, 2021:

Guest preacher Rev. Miriam Spies will be joining us.

Miriam Spies is an ordained minister, currently pursuing PhD studies at Emmanuel College. Her current work surrounds disability and practical theology and disability studies, looking at how congregations can best support disabled leadership. Her Cerebral Palsy impacts her speech, so the text of her sermon will be provided.

Epiphany I – “Magi and Mystery” – Sunday January 10th, 2021

This Sunday we listen to the story of the Magi visiting Jesus. Emily draws on a few different versions to listen to the story. How might we be like the Magi changed by our journey this past way?

Our worship on Zoom will also include a time to share in prayer together.

Whichever way you join in worship this morning, join Zoom at 11:15am for a time of conversation.

Our children’s program is also about the Magi, and can be watched at 9:55am on Zoom or any time on YouTube. If you missed last Sunday’s program, take a few minutes to watch this first program led by Rebecca!

Next Sunday
Our theme next week is “Will You Come?” as we hear the first of two weeks of stories of disciples being called by Jesus.

On January 24th we look forward to being joined by guest preacher Rev. Miriam Spies, member of the World Council of Churches Central Committee, current PhD student at Emmanuel College, and preacher at the opening worship of General Council 43 in 2018.

Introducing Savanna Webb and ENERGIZE!

Savanna Webb

The children and youth hiring team is pleased to introduce Savanna Webb as Leaside’s new Youth Coach, from January to June 2020. Savanna brings several years of experience coaching as a part of a multi-sport youth program, as well as experience mentoring youth and working in a spiritual context. Since COVID-19, Savanna’s work has moved online, and she teaches sports skills and techniques as well as planning and leading online games and activities. Savanna is relatable, motivated, and fun, and we are pleased to have her join our team at Leaside United Church.

Savanna is launching Energize our new program for Youth age 11 and up. With COVID we are all spending too much time sitting in front of screens. Energize will have a focus on exercise and physical activity, with other youth from our church and the wider community. All youth are invited to take part and invite a friend or two to join you.

The program will meet once or twice a month, along with opportunities to connect and share ideas and physical challenges in between. Once it’s safe to do so, we look forward to gatherings in our newly renovated gym! The program will include time to be active, and to practice fundamentals that will develop skillsets useful for many team sports, as well as life more generally.

The first get together of Energize, over Zoom will be Sunday, January 24th from 3-4pm, and will include some time to get to know each other as well as games and physical activity. If you plan to attend or invite friends, please let Emily know (emily@leasideuc.com) and we’ll send you the Zoom link!
