The 2nd Sunday after Christmas | Beginning with a God who pitches tents | Rev. Emily Gordon

I am looking forward to 2020 at Leaside United! Thank you for all your thoughts and well wishes with Kieran’s arrival and the rest of my leave. It has been lovely to have the time getting used to my expanded family, but I’m enjoying connecting again with the work and worship of our congregation.

This Sunday we continue with the season of Christmas (yes, it doesn’t actually end until Monday – despite the appearance of Valentine’s Day chocolates!) We’ll take the opportunity to sing a few more Christmas carols, and a new LUC sung blessing. The choir will sing the beautiful Alleluia Introit, beginning our service with a sense of wonder and beauty. This week we’ll also have our first “Spiritual Sparks” insert that you can take home for further reflection, or to share with someone else.

In my sermon “Beginning with a God who pitches tents” I’ll think about the questions: What kind of beginning is the birth of that little baby Jesus? Where are we pitching tents and where is God?

Spirit Alive – December 14th 10:30am

Spirit Alive

Saturday, December 14, 10:30-12 noon.  (Please note 10:30 later start time.)

Lucy Burke will be our leader.

Join us to explore the Magic of Memory.  So many of our sacred texts, liturgies, hymns, celebrations, and countless aspects of our everyday lives, use the power of memory to inspire, heal, and delight.  Christmas and the Turning of the New Year, both in their religious and wider cultural aspects, offer a rich treasure of opportunities, for making, choosing, and enjoying good memories, that honour the best of the past year, and energize us for the new.  All welcome.  “Madeleines” (per Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past) provided.  Bring your own beverage and other snacks if desired.

Mairlyn Smith Presentation and Book Launch

Special Guest Speaker Mairlyn Smith will be coming to Leaside United Church this Sunday, November 10th at 1:00 pm!

Mairlyn is a home economist, Cityline and Breakfast Television nutrition expert, comedian, actor and author. She will be speaking to us and sharing her optimistic outlook on life and, of course her love for fibre, in the launch of her newest cookbook Peace, Love and Fibre.

Grab a friend or two and come spend a casual afternoon with Mairlyn. She will have her new cookbook available for sale at a reduced rate and will gladly sign your copy. This cookbook is a gorgeous collection of fibre-rich recipes for the whole family, a great hostess or holiday gift you can stock up on now.

Admission is $5.00 or PWYC. The event will be held in the Sanctuary at Leaside United Church 822 Millwood Road. Light refreshments will be provided. Enter through the front doors on McRae or use the accessible ramp off of Millwood where there is an elevator. Free street parking available.

Looking forward to seeing you!
