Quick Q & A with our Treasurer & Rentals Coordinator … Ann Fraser

Ann Fraser joined the LUC team in June of 2018.  It’s been a whirlwind of busyness since then as Ann tackles the position of Treasurer and Rentals Coordinator for Leaside United Church.  Recently, she took a quick break to answer a few questions about her life outside of her new responsibilities at LUC.

Any upcoming travel plans?

In December my whole family is going to Costa Rica. There are 24 for us, 10 adults, including my parents, and 14 children, all first cousins. Their ages are between 9 and 23. We try to vacation together regularly but haven’t been south since 2010. Everyone is excited.

If you had to eat one thing for every meal going forward, what would you eat?

Honey. Each year my Dad sources a honey producer near his farm and purchases about 150 pounds to be distributed between himself and his daughters. He calls it liquid gold and I couldn’t agree more.

If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, whose would they be? Why?

Bill Gates. I would love to experience his level of intelligence and the pleasure that philanthropy must bring to those in need and your overall well being.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Don’t ever think you are incapable of achieving your dreams. You’re smarter than you realize.

Where is your happy place?

LUC Renovation Team Communiqué – September 25, 2018

September 25, 2018

We had a successful Renovation Team Town Hall on Sunday September 16th, 2018 with very good attendance and guest speaker architect Michael Nicholas-Schmidt, Senior Associate from Larkin Architects Ltd.

Larkin was chosen from a short list of five architects.  Larkin has completed over 100 projects for churches and parishes in Southern Ontario and are architecture specialists with an expertise in heritage restoration/rehabilitation facilitating the designs of sacred spaces.

Roberto Chiotti, Principal and Michael Nicholas-Schmidt, Senior Associate of Larkin Architects Ltd. are the lead architects for our project.  Roberto is a founding partner of Larkin and in addition to his full architect credentials he also earned a master’s degree in Theological Studies.

Roberto and Michael have been very knowledgeable and forthright with us and it’s not all good news – because they and others have already told us our expectations are very high.  Probably $4 to 5 million projected costs which is double our budget (we are currently working with a budget of $2.5 million).  Larkin will help us to focus in on selecting the key priorities for us going forward.  All things will not be able to be done and we know you understand this.

Our Leaside United Church Future – Communiqué

Update of Key Missional Priorities and the LUC Renovation Project

August 31st, 2018

This is the first of a number of communiqués that will be issued biweekly for the next number of weeks/months. We hope that you find them to be educational, transparent and informative. We also wish to use these communiqués to show the main benefits of the processes, directions and phases proposed.

With the coming together of Leaside United and Presteign-Woodbine United Churches in June, 2017, we have prepared and are implementing the Congregation Development Plan .

I talked with Co-Chairs Brenda French, Warren McDougall and Graham Lute and they indicated, “We are trying to lead the renovation project based on the majority of the key directions that came from the congregation research and surveys that were carried out since September 2017.  We are seeking to carry out the congregations directions not our own personal feelings”.

Below, you will find some of the current issues the renovation team are working on plus an important timetable focused on the work to be carried out by the architects.

Watch for upcoming updates online, in the bulletin, your weekly email or check back for past updates on the website here.

Thank you very much,

Michele Petick
