NOTES FROM LUCY:

Spirit Alive – Saturday, June 2, 2018 – Summer Year-End Party – All Welcome!

Led by Lucy Burke, meeting at the home of Bea and Ross Lawford. In this Spirit Alive session, led by Lucy Burke, we lean with delight into Nature’s Summer treasures, and we will consider some of the thoughts of Henry David Thoreau, celebrated naturalist, social activist, writer and philosopher. A United Church Observer article, this past February, celebrated Thoreau and his iconic book on Walden Pond, describing him as having a poet’s soul and a scientist’s eye, and as one who urged his readers to live simply, intentionally, and in harmony with Nature. (Read the article here –  “Visiting Walden Pond”.  What might living simply and intentionally mean for you? Does Thoreau’s admonition to “live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment” resonate with you? What do you think of Thoreau’s equally famous friend Emerson’s words, quoted in the Observer article? “Make your own Bible,” he wrote. “Select and collect those words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.” (Please bring any of your own thoughts on these to share with us!)Come at the regular time of 10:00 to 12 noon for the Spirit Alive program, and then, if you can, stay for potluck lunch into the afternoon. It is a true potluck, so you may bring whatever you would like to share.

Worship Today – Sunday May 6th @ 10:30am

This Sunday, we have the opportunity to welcome Rhiannon Hill as our guest worship leader and preacher. Rhiannon is a student at Emmanuel College in Toronto and has just completed her first year. After spending several years in the world of Photography and Fashion Styling she found herself back in the world of church and was reinvigorated with a deep need to explore Christian faith and a relationship with the Divine in all things.

This is a wonderful opportunity to share in Rhiannon’s reflections and insights, as well as offering her the opportunity to continue to grow as a preacher. When I did some of my first guest preaching as an Emmanuel Student – which happened to be at Presteign-Woodbine – I was invited by Cheryl-Lynn MacPherson to visit the church, discuss the service and share wisdom. I was pleased to be able to offer this same opportunity to Rhiannon, and we were able to spend some time getting to know each other, sharing our experiences, and talking about worship. I look forward to hearing about Rhiannon’s words when I return.

Blessings,
Rev. Emily Gordon

Emily’s Weekday Wonderings – A Congregation with and for Babies

Being a Congregation with and for Babies

There is all sorts of talk about babies, children, and youth as “the church of the future” but the fact is that they are all a part of the church, right now. Whether a few months, years, decades, or centuries, everyone has a right to be a participant in a community of faith. Having babies in our midst is a reminder of the cycle of life, and that we celebrate new life in all its forms.

It can also be a reminder not to idealize things. A crying baby can be the perfect corrective to the nonsense in Christmas carol lines such as “the little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.” Of course Jesus cried. He was a baby! That is a 100% guarantee. Every Christmas we celebrate a baby, so what is better than to celebrate the divine that exists within every baby, every time we gather?

Babies can also be a good reminder that faith is not all about us. When we are caring for a baby, or even in the presence of a baby, we are reminded how each of us depends on others so that our needs can be met. This is always the case, babies just make it obvious. At the same time, babies remind us of our faith calling to care for others, which we do in many ways in our lives. This is the outward-reaching movement that fuels our outreach work, our pastoral care work, and the shape of our life as a community. …
